The Charnel House is one of Picasso's most masterful compositions, it represents the everyday wretchedness of war, setting the horror of the massacre of a family against the domestic environment. The piece was started in 1945 and towards its completion was adapted to reflect the photographs Picasso saw of the Nazi concentration camps. The use of colour and the position of limbs underlines the banality of the theme and loss of identity in death.
